Box Score—Cal State Fullerton 11, UC Riverside 0 (5 innings)
Box Score—Cal State Fullerton 3, UC Riverside 1
Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team returned to Big West Conference action Wednesday afternoon dropping a doubleheader to Cal State Fullerton, 11-0 and 3-1 at Amy S. Harrison Field.
The Highlanders fall to 0-11 in league play and 16-26 overall while the Titans improve to 19-25, 6-8.
After two scoreless innings in which the teams' combined to leave three runners on base in game one, Cal State Fullerton put a six-spot on the board in the third. The Titans recorded eight hits while batting around the order, and capitalized on three UCR errors.
Starting pitcher Ashley Ercolano allowed the six runs in 2.2 innings of work, and gave way to Sophie Slagle who closed out the inning without another run coming across.
The next inning, though, Ariel Tsuchiyama drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on an illegal pitch, and advanced to third on a ground out. She eventually came home an another illegal pitch to make it a 7-0 score.
In the fifth, CSF plated four additional runs to increase its lead to 11-0. The Highlanders recorded just two hits during the game and had 17 batters come to the plate as the Titans cruised to the 11-0, five-inning victory.
Cal State Fullerton continued its offense into the second game of the doubleheader, quickly going up 2-0 in the first. With two outs, Desiree Ybarra drew a walk, and one batter later Eliza Crawford homered to put the Titans on the board.
In the second, back-to-back doubles by Carissa Turang and Tiffany Sheffler made it 3-0, but UCR starting pitcher Alyssa Razo settled down after that, allowing just two hits while leaving the Titans scoreless the rest of the way.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders offense struggled and never quite got on track, ammassing two hits through six innings.
In the seventh, however, UCR rallied to bring the game within two runs. Alexis Pickett singled to lead off the frame, and with two outs, came home on Natalie Sanchez's RBI single.
That was all the scoring the Highlanders could muster, however, as a final out ended any comeback bid, and secured the doubleheader sweep for Cal State Fullerton.
Next up for UCR is a three-game series against UC Davis starting on Saturday, April 20 at noon PT at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
