Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team rebounded from a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly in game one of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to mercy rule the Mustangs in five innings, 8-0, in the second game.
Kayla White went 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored as the Highlanders improved their record to 18-30 overall and 2-15 in Big West play. Cal Poly falls to 19-30-1 on the season and 8-12 in league action.
In the nightcap, the Mustangs broke up Alyssa Razo's perfect game with back-to-back singles with one out in the second inning. UCR's defense worked its way out of the jam, though, and its offense came alive in the bottom of that frame to stake the Highlanders to a 4-0 lead.
Dionne Anderson got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after stealing second, came home on Ashley Ercolano's single through the left side. Brittanie Akey then laid down a bunt single, and Natalie Sanchez sacrificed both runners into scoring position.
Kaylie Atkinson came to bat as pinch hitter, and laced a shot into left field that scored Ercolano, but as Akey was rounding home, she got thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning.
White was up next for UC Riverside, and hit her team-leading 10th homer of the season to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
After leaving two on base in the next inning, the Highlanders continued their scoring plating two runs in the fourth. With White on second base and Alexis Pickett at first, Marissa Escalante reached on a catcher's interference to load the bases for Anderson, who singled to left center to drive in two runs.
A walk, single, and hit by pitch loaded the bases for UC Riverside in the fifth inning with no outs. With White up to bat, the senior outfielder singled through the left side to bring two runners across, putting the Highlanders on top, 8-0, and giving them a five-inning, mercy rule victory.
Razo gave up just four hits in the game while striking out two and walking one. Jordan Yates was saddled with the loss for the Mustangs giving up four runs in 1.2 innings of work.
After five scoreless innings in game one, Cal Poly broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the sixth plating two off Highlanders pitcher Ashley Ercolano. Back to back singles put two on base for the Mustangs, and a single to left field from Jillian Anderson resulted in the game's first run. Cal Poly put one more on the board when Jessie Hinojosa came in on a fielder’s choice from Ashley Romano.
In the early going, Cal Poly put runners on in each of the first five innings but were unable to capitalize leaving eight runners on base. In that time, Eroclano gave up five hits, walking two and striking out one.
Meanwhile, UC Riverside caused some trouble of their own, putting runners on the base paths in four of the first five innings with four hits and three walks. Mustangs pitcher Chloe Wurst worked out of the jam each time forcing the Highlanders to leave six on base.
UC Riverside looked to make a seventh inning charge after a lead off walk for Nicolette Lujan and a single by White. Pickett sacrificed both runners one base, but Escalante's fielder's choice got Lujan thrown out at the plate, leaving UCR down to one final out. Ercolano looked to help her own own cause as she came to bat, but popped out to right field to end the Highlanders rally.
Ercolano was charged with the loss for the Highlanders giving up two runs on nine hits. Wurst went the distance in the circle for the Mustangs shutting out UCR to earn the win.
The rubber match of this three-game Big West Conference series is slated for noon PT Sunday at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
