Riverside—The UC Riverside Softball Team scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning Sunday afternoon to defeat Cal Poly, 3-2, and take the season series winning two of the three games over the weekend.
The series victory is the first for the Highlanders in 2013, and improves their record to 19-30 overall and 3-15 in Big West play. The Mustangs fall to 19-31-1 and 8-13 in conference action.
The game was tied at 2-2 with two outs in the sixth when UCR scored the game-winning run.
Marissa Escalante drew a lead-off walk, and moved to second on a sac bunt from Dionne Anderson. Ashley Ercolano then followed with a single to put runners at the corners. With two outs, Natalie Sanchez doubled through the right side driving home Escalante for what would be the go-ahead run.
Cal Poly threatened in the top of the seventh, as Ashley Romano singled to lead off the frame, and moved to second on a sac bunt. Mariah Cochiolo then singled to put runners at the corners, but the UCR defense got a fly out and a pop up to end the game and preserve the 3-2 victory.
Relief pitcher Alyssa Razo earned the win in the circle for the Highlanders, tossing four innings while giving up five hits and no runs. Jordan Yates took the loss for the Mustangs allowing the game-winner to come home.
In the beginning of the game, UCR starting pitcher Sophie Slagle retired the first two batters in order in the first inning, but the next three batters each singled to load the bases. The Highlanders defense came through with a final out, however, as Kayla White caught a flyball in centerfield to end the Mustangs threat.
UC Riverside got on board in the bottom of the first, as White led off with a single and advanced to second on an Ariel Shore sacrifice. With two outs, Escalante singled through the left side to bring White home for a 1-0 Highlanders lead.
The next inning, Sanchez blasted a two-out homer over the left centerfield fence to increase UCR's advantage to 2-0.
Cal Poly tied the game in the top of the third with a pair of runs. Romano singled to lead off, and with one out got into scoring position by stealing second. Cochiolo then drove her in with a single to left field to cut the Highlanders margin to 2-1.
With two outs, Emily Ceccacci laced another single to left field to bring in the tying run for the Mustangs, 2-2.
Razo took to the circle for the Highlanders in the fourth and retired the side in order. In the fifth, she gave up a leadoff single, and in the sixth, allowed two hits, but both times the defense got out of the inning unscathed.
Meanwhile, Cal Poly switched pitchers in the fourth, putting in Yates who replaced Chloe Wurst. Yates was effective giving up just a walk and single in the fourth and fifth innings.
Prior to first pitch, the Highlanders celebrated senior day honoring the three members of the class of 2013: Alexis Pickett, Ariel Shore, and Kayla White.
UC Riverside now hits the road for a three-game Big West Conference series at Cal State Northridge beginning on Saturday, May 4 in Northridge, CA.
