Northridge, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team struggled for the third straight game, Sunday, as Cal State Northridge completed a Big West Conference sweep with a 15-3 victory (Box Score).
Due to illness and injury, relief pitcher Mark Garcia (3-3) made his first start for the Highlanders (14-13, 3-3) since March 1, 2011. He got lead-off hitter Michael Livingston to line out to third to open the first, but then issued a walk to Kyle Attl, and a single to left by Nathan Ring.
Garcia got the second out of the inning on an infield fly, but walked Kyle Ferramola to load the bases, and allowed a single to left by Alexis Mercado to put the Matadors (16-15, 4-2) up 2-0. The next batter, Chester Pak, singled to center to give CSUN a three-run lead.
The senior worked his way out of the inning, and gave up just a single in the top of the second, but he ran into trouble again in the top of the third. Joshua Goossen-Brown led oft the inning with a walk, and Ferramola beat out an infield single ending Garcia's night.
Kevin Sprague came on in relief, and he struggled as well. Mercado greeted him with a bunt single, and Pak lifted a sac fly to right to make it 4-0 Northridge. Nicolas Osuna grounded out to short scoring another run, and Michael Najera singled to right for the sixth score of the game. Livingston then doubled to left to give CSUN a 7-0 lead.
That was more than the Matadors would need as the Highlanders managed just six hits on the day. Cal State Northridge starter John Salas (2-4) gave up just four hits in his 7.2 innings of work while striking out six.
The UC Riverside relief corp was touched for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth putting the game out of reach. The Highlanders scored three runs late, but all of the runs were unearned thanks to three defensive miscues by the Matadors.
UCR remains on the road this week as they travel to Loyola Marymount on Tuesday for a 3 pm PT start.
