Fourth Ranked Cal State Fullerton Tops Highlanders Baseball 14-7

Riverside, CA- The Cal State Fullerton Baseball Team backed up its number four national ranking Friday evening at the Plex, banging out 17 hits on its way to a 14-7 victory over UC Riverside (Box Score).
Cal State Fullerton (40-7, 16-3) put up a four spot on the board against Dylan Stuart (3-6) and the Highlanders in the top of the second to take an early lead.
After loading the bases with no outs, Greg Velazquez ripped a single through the left side to plate two for the Titans. Stuart then retired a pair before Richy Pedroza looped a single into centerfield to score the runner from second. The Titans scored one more in the inning when Carlos Lopez singled under the glove of the diving Alex Rubanowitz.
Cal State Fullerton extended its lead plating one in the third and one in the fourth thanks to four hits and a UC Riverside error. Velazquez picked up his third RBI of the day when he brought home Chad Wallach who reached on a two-out double in the third. A single to center by Lopez gave the Titans a 6-0 lead after four innings of play.
After keeping Cal State Fullerton off the board in the fifth, the Titans offense erupted again scoring four more runs off of Stuart in the sixth, and four in the seventh off of relief pitcher Kevin Sprague.
In the meantime, Titans' freshman phenom Thomas Eshelman (9-2) kept the Highlanders quiet through five giving up five hits and striking out two. UC Riverside threatened in the bottom of the third and fourth innings putting two runners on in both frames before grounding into double plays to end each inning.
Cal State Fullerton went to its bullpen in the sixth, and the Highlanders (10-27, 7-12) finally broke into the scoring column plating two runs each in the sixth and the eighth.
After a lead off single from Devyn Bolasky in the sixth, Joe Chavez doubled to center to bring in the Highlanders first run..Chavez then advanced to third off a ground out by Clayton Prestridge before scoring on a fielder’s choice.
Bolasky started things off again in the eighth for UC Riverside working a walk on four straight balls. Chavez’s double advanced Bolasky to third for Prestidge who singled to plate one. Chavez also came into score on the play capitalizing on a throwing error by the Titans.
The Highlanders scored three more in the ninth to cut the Titans advantage to 14-7, but the lead was too large for UC Riverside to overcome.
