Long Beach State Shuts Out Baseball, 5-0

Long Beach, CA—Long Beach State limited the UC Riverside Baseball Team to just six hits Friday evening and strung enough of their eight base knocks together to walk away with a 5-0 victory (box score).
The game was scoreless after one inning of play, and the Highlanders (12-29, 8-14) looked to get on the board first in their half of the second as Francisco Tellez opened the frame by ripping a double to right, and Phil Holinsworth reached on a bunt single to put runners at the corners with nobody out.
Unfortunately, Dirtbags (26-25, 12-10) starter Shane Carle struck out Nick Vilter, Alex Rubanowitz and Bart Steponovich to get out of the jam.
Carle's offense gave him something to work with in the bottom of the second thanks to a Zach Miller single to left, a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Serven and an RBI single by Jeff McNeil.
It remained a 1-0 game through five despite the fact that the Highlanders put runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the third and fourth innings. In the third, Carle sandwiched a pair of ground outs around a fly ball to center to end the UCR threat, and in the fourth, he struck out the side once again to preserve the shutout.
Although he wouldn't need it, the Dirtbags tacked on some insurance runs for Carle in the bottom of the sixth with the benefit of just a pair of singles. UC Riverside starter Dylan Stuart (3-8) got the first two outs with ease, but he issued a two-out walk to Ino Patron on a full count before giving up a single through the right side to Zack Rivera that advance Patron to second.
Stuart might have eventually limited the damage to a single run, but his wild pitch moved both base runners up 90 feet, and Jeff Yamaguchi's single through the left side scored Patron and Rivera to make it 3-1 Long Beach State.
Carle didn't let up retiring the Highlanders in order in the top of the seventh and allowing just a two-out walk in the eighth.
UC Riverside and Long Beach State play game two of their three-game Big West Conference series on Saturday beginning at 2 pm PT.
Kevin Sprague took over for Stuart to start the bottom of the eighth, and he put a pair of base runners on with one out thanks to a single and a walk. After a ground out to short advance both Dirtbags, Miller singled through the right side to make it 5-0 LBSU.
After striking out David Andriese to start the ninth Carle allowed Tellez to single to center, and walked Holinsworth on five pitches, but he closed out the game by ringing up pinch hitter Kyle Boudreau and Rubanowitz for the complete-game victory.
Carle struck out 12 batters on the evening walking just two to pick up his fourth win of the season.
