8/30/2013 10:58:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team welcomed the Iona Gaels to the Inland Empire Friday evening for the season opener for both clubs, and freshman Romario Lomeli's goal in the 74th minute gave the Highlanders a 1-0 victory (Box Score).
UCR (1-0) controlled play during the first half outshooting the Gaels, 6-2, but none of the Highlanders shots found its way past Iona (0-1) keeper Julian Petrello.
UC Riverside forward Andy Contreras nearly put the Highlanders on top with 7:23 gone in the second, but his shot bounced off the crossbar out of harm's way.
Iona picked up the pace on offense shortly thereafter outshooting the Highlanders 5-4 to close out the match, but with 16:18 on the clock, Lomeli and Ivan Garcia exchanged a give-and-go in the left side of the box, and Lomeli beat Petrello to the right side of the goal to give UC Riverside the lead.
The Gaels nearly tied the score with 6:11 remaining when Alex Ramos uncorked a shot from the left side of the Highlanders box, but it caromed off of the cross bar, and the score remained tied at zero.
The Highlanders welcome the Marist Red Foxes to the UC Riverside Soccer Stadium on Sunday for a 2 pm PT kick off.
