Box Score - San Jose State 3, UC Riverside 0
Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team battled in a tough three-set loss to San Jose State on Saturday morning in which there were 34 tie scores and 16 lead changes throughout. The Spartans (3-6) took the first set 25-20 and ecked out 25-23, 25-23 victories in sets two and three for the sweep.
Ashley Cox had a match-high 15 kills for the Highlanders (0-8) while Cristina Maietta added 13. Hanah Blume was the only SJSU player to record double-digit kills with 10.
After falling behind 4-0 in set one, UCR went on a 12-3 rally to go up 12-7. Maietta served for the final eight points of that run as the Highlanders capitalized on four Spartans errors. San Jose State quickly countered by scoring four consecutive, however, and going on to take an 18-15 lead.
It was the Highlanders turn to rally as they then scored four staight to retake the lead, 19-18. UCR's offense came to a halt, though, as SJSU made a late push scoring five straight and seven of the final eight points in the come-from-behind, 25-20 win.
It was a similar story late in the second set as UC Riverside led by three, 22-19, only to see the Spartans score four unanswered to go up 23-22. A Cox kill tied the frame at 23 apiece, but UCR could not stop two consecutive kills by San Jose State in the 25-23 loss.
With 18 ties scores and eight lead changes in the third set alone, the Highlanders were looking to extend the match with a win, and had the opportunity to do so leading 23-21 late. Needing just two points for the win, UC Riverside's defense came up short allowing four consecutive kills as San Jose State had the 25-23 victory in hand.
UCR concludes the Bankers Classic with a 5 pm PT match against Winthrop on Saturday.
