Box Score - UC Riverside 3, Winthrop 1
Stockton, CA - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team picked up its first victory of the 2013 season Saturday evening with a 3-1 win over Winthrop to conclude the Bankers Classic. Cristina Maietta led a trio of Highlanders (1-8) in double-digit kills with 19, while Annishia McKoy added 12 and Ashley Cox had 11.
After dropping the first set 28-26, UCR rebounded in the second to earn a 29-27 victory to tie the match at 1-1. The Highlanders then closed it out winning 25-23 and 25-22 in sets three and four to give first-year Head Coach Michelle Patton her first win at the helm of the program.
UC Riverside and Winthrop (7-3) were evenly matched throughout the contest with 37 tie scores over the four sets, including 13 ties in the first set alone. The Highlanders held off three set-points late in that first frame as the Eagles had opportunities at 24-23, 25-24, and 26-25. Each time, though, UCR scored one point to tie the set, but could not score two in a row as Winthrop used consecutive kills by Irene Ojukwu to earn the 28-26 win.
In set two, the Highlanders staved off set-point at 25-24, and after three more tie scores, took the lead and closed out the set with a McKoy kill and an Eagles error for the 29-27 victory.
UCR turned a 17-14 deficit in set three into a 17-17 tie thanks to a Winthrop error and back-to-back service aces from Tyler Dorsey. There were then five tie scores in the following plays, the last at 23-23.
Taking their momentum from the second set, the Highlanders finished strong using a Fabiana Rosas kill and a Maietta service ace to secure the 25-23 win to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the final set, UC Riverside jumped out to a 4-0 lead and kept it up until late in the frame, leading 20-15. However, Winthrop had one last rally in them, scoring four consecutive and tying the set at 21-21 and 22-22.
UC Riverside had the last say, though, as a Dorsey kill made it 23-22, and back-to-back attack errors by the Eagles sealed the 25-22 win for UCR.
The Highlanders hit a season-best .247 during the match while recording another season-best of 11 aces.
Next up for the blue and gold is their final weekend of non-conference action September 20-21 with matches against Wyoming, Utah Valley, and Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
