Men's Golf Moves Up One Spot To Conclude Saint Mary's Invitational

Seaside, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Golf Team moved up one spot to 16th place to conclude the Saint Mary's Invitational Tuesday with a third-round score of 299. The Highlanders three-round total of 913 put them one stroke ahead of fellow Big West foe Cal State Northridge, and four in front of Hawai'i.
The Highlanders benefited from an even-par 72 from David Gazzolo and a one-over 73 from Leven Simon Seay on Tuesday. Additionally, Sam Gillis fired a 75 and Brandon Tsujimoto shot 79 to give UCR its 299 score.
"We teed up a combined two years of experience from our five guys playing this weekend, with one junior and four freshmen in our first tournament of the year," Director of Golf/Head Men's Coach Eric Riehle stated. "Some inexperience showed in the first round but we rebounded nicely with two respectable team scores in rounds two and three."
UC Riverside dramatically improved its score between the first and second rounds on Monday, going from a 317 first-round score to a 297 second-round score. The Highlanders were tied for 17th place after the first day but used a consistent third-round score to leapfrog two schools for their 16th place finish.
Simon Seay was the Highlanders top finisher placing in a tie for 25th overall with a 223 (78-72-73). Gazzolo was next finishing in a tie for 42nd (83-71-72=226), while Sam Gillis tied for 80th (81-78-75=234), Brandon Tsujimoto tied for 92nd (72-76-79=237), and Pachara Sakulyong tied for 94th (76-78-84=238).
California won the team competition by 30 strokes, shooting a 10-under-par 854 total score. Oregon finished second at 884 followed by San Diego (886) in third.
San Diego's Grant Forrest won the individual title with a seven-under-par 209 total.
UC Riverside has almost a month off before returning to the links at the Herb Wimberly Invitational in Las Cruces, New Mexico on October 20-21.
