Ivan Garcia's Score With 30 Seconds To Go Gives Men's Soccer 3-2 Win Over Bradley
9/8/2013 12:52:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Las Vegas, NV—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team battled back from single-goal deficits on two occasions Sunday, and Ivan Garcia's score with 30 seconds to go in regulation gave the Highlanders a 3-2 victory over Bradley in their final match of the UNLV Nike Invitational (Box Score).
The victory improves UCR's record to 4-0 on the season which ties the 2012 squad or the best four-match start in program history. Last season, the Highlanders won their first seven matches before a 2-0 loss to CSU Bakersfield on September 23 ended the streak.
On Sunday, however, the Braves didn't waste any time letting the Highlanders know they were in for a battle as Alan Badat tapped in Aaron Birk cross with just 30 seconds gone in the match to put Bradley on top 1-0.
UC Riverside regrouped, though, and just under seven minutes later, Garcia drove unmarked into the box and went top shelf to beat the Braves keeper for his first goal of the year.
It was still a 1-1 tie early in the second half, but Badat broke the tie in the 55th minute scoring off of a scramble in front of the Highlanders goal. It was the third goal of the season for Badat who sat out the entire 2012 campaign Following ACL surgery.
Freshman Romario Lomelli brought UC Riverside back to even with his third score of the year as Richie Osborne found him with a cross from the right baseline.
The match appeared to be heading into overtime, but a pair of Bradley defenders collided in the box allowing Bryan Orta's cross to find Garcia for the match winner with just 30 seconds remaining.
GAME NOTES
Garcia is the first member of the Highlanders to score two goals in a match this season. The last UC Riverside to do it was Richie Osborne who scored a pair at UC Irvine on October 31, 2012.
KC John had four saves in three matches entering play on Sunday, but made five saves in the match against Bradley.
Badat's first score of the match ended the Highlanders streak of 270:30 straight scoreless minutes on defense to start the 2013 season.
