Hefflin Sets School Record In Win As Women's XC Wins 5k Highlander Invitational

Riverside, CA—UC Riverside Women's Cross Country senior Raquel Hefflin won the Highlander Invitational Saturday morning setting a new school record in the process as the Highlanders won the 5k event. Complete Results.

UCR placed three runners in the top-10 and all five in the top-20 to total 42 points, beating out second-place San Diego State by 21 points. Cal State Fullerton finished third overall with 90 points followed by USC with 94, and CSUN in fifth at 96.

UC Riverside has now won the Highlander Invitational twice in the past three years.

Hefflin's time of 16:46.6 beat the previous school record by five and a half seconds, and beat her own personal-best 5k time by around 25 seconds. She also finished 15 seconds ahead of the next runner, CSUN's Elizabeth Nelson.

This is also Hefflin's second straight individual victory at the Highlander Invitational, as she won last year's event as well.

Following Hefflin, redshirt freshman Faith Makau placed third in a PR time of 17:13.9 while Brianna Simmons was eighth in 17:58.8. Weslie Totten established her best 5k time finishing 11th overall in 18:06.6, while Maryann Holliday placed 19th in a new PR of 18:18.9.

UC Riverside now has two weeks to prepare for the 2014 Big West Conference Championship scheduled for Saturday, November 1 at 9:15 am at the Ag/Ops Course in Riverside.
