10/29/2014 9:42:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Riverside--Juan Mendoza Jr. celebrated senior day in style Wednesday evening, scoring the golden goal just 36 seconds into the first overtime period, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 win over CSUN.
Â
UC Riverside had the better of the play throughout the first half, outshooting the Matadors 11-5, and leading 5-0 in corner kicks. Despite these advantages, the Highlanders couldn't find the back of the net, and the teams entered the locker room at the break tied at zero.
Â
CSUN picked up the pace in the second half, and both teams had their chances, but it was still a scoreless tie after 90 minutes.
Â
It didn't take long for that to change, though, as just 36 seconds into the first overtime, Mendoza headed the rebound of a missed Romario Lomelli shot past the Matadors keeper, sending UC Riverside streaming onto the field.
The win, coupled with UC Irvine's 1-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton, moves UCR into second place in the South Division with two matches to play.
Â
The Highlanders are on the road for their final two matches of the regular season beginning with a Saturday, November 1 match at Cal State Fullerton. Kickoff is at 7 pm PT.
