Five UCR Women's Soccer Players Honored On 2014 Big West All-Conference Teams

Irvine, CA—The Big West Conference released the 2014 Women's Soccer All-Conference teams this afternoon, naming UC Riverside's Amber Marani to the first team, Tyler Cunningham to the second team, and Blanca Barrio, Alexa Bustamante, and Elizabeth Silas to the Honorable Mention Team respectively. Marani, a midfielder, was one of two players on the Highlanders squad to play in and start all 18 matches on the season. The Walnut, CA native scored her lone goal of the season against Cal Poly on October 19 (box score/recap).
Cunningham, a forward, earns her second-career all-conference honor after being named to the second team one year ago. This season, the junior led the team with 16 points scoring three goals and recording 10 assists to set UC Riverside's record for most assists in a single season. Those 10 assists are also the second-most in the conference this year.
She earned Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors on August 25 after scoring a goal and adding two assists during the Highlanders games at the Rebel Classic (story). She was named Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Tournament Outstanding Offensive Player and to the All-Tournament Team after helping the Highlanders defeat Grand Canyon (3-0) and Northern Arizona (4-2).
Barrio, a forward, tied for 10th in the league with four goals to lead the Highlanders, while also dishing out six assists for 14 total points—second on the squad behind Cunningham. Earlier in the year, she earned Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors for matches played from September 8-14 after recording six points for the Highlanders in their two shutout victories against Northern Iowa and Bakersfield (story).
Bustamante, a midfielder, tied for third on the squad with three goals this season while also adding one assist for seven points.
Silas, the Highlanders starting goalkeeper, ranks fourth in the Big West this season with 72 saves while tying for second with eight wins. She earned the conference's Defensive Player of the Week award for matches played from September 22-28 after recording a shutout over Duquesne and helping UCR nearly engineer an upset win over then sixth-ranked Texas Tech (story).
The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team concluded its season with a 1-0 blanking of Long Beach State this past Sunday afternoon to finish the year with an 8-7-3 overall record—the team's first since the 2006 season.
