Riverside—UC Riverside Softball athlete Shylene Helms is in her freshman season with the blue and gold, and we here at gohighlanders.com got to know her a little better this winter via our Highlander Highlights series.

Shylene ...
... is a freshman from San Jacinto, CA
... plays third base and outfield
... graduated 11th in her high school class
... studying biology
... will not eat eggs sunny side up
... wants to learn how to surf
... would love to meet Justin Bieber and Taylor Lautner
Shylene is Native American; Hupa from her mother's side and Soboba Lusieno from her father's side.
One of her greatest accomplishments so far in life was not getting lower than an "A" throughout high school.
When she was five years old, she smashed her pinky finger between a quad and a tree and it had to be amputated.
Her favorite quote is, " When your legs are tired, let your heart do the rest."
She believes that if you wake up with a positive mindset and look forward to the good things instead of dreading the bad things, your life will be better.
