Against NMSU, the Highlanders got on board first with three runs in the top of the first inning. Dionne Anderson singled to lead off the frame, and advanced to second following a single from Karina Romero. Taylor Wright joined the singles party as she laced one to center field, driving in Anderson for the first run of the game.
Ashley Ercolano then drove a base hit to left field to load the bases, and two batters later, Marissa Escalante was hit by a pitch to score the second run. Haley Harris added a single for UCR to score Wright, putting the Highlanders up 3-0.
The lead was shortlived, however, as the Aggies countered with four runs in the bottom of that inning to go up 4-3. A double and a single started off the inning, followed by a wild pitch and consecutive walks. Naomi Tellez then singled to the shortstop, and cleared the bases as three runners came home.
New Mexico State tacked on solo runs in both the second and third innings to increase its lead to 6-3.
UCR got one back in the top of the fourth, as Wright doubled sending home Kris DeAnda who previously singled to center field.
The Aggies added to their lead scoring three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. In the fifth, NMSU scored all runs with two outs, capitalizing on a walk and three UCR defensive miscues. The next inning, Jasmine Casados hit a two-RBI homer to push the lead out to 11-4.
UC Riverside wasn't done, however, plating six runs in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to 11-10. The inning started with three straight singles from Romero, Wright, and Ercolano, and after an out, Escalante double to score a pair.
Following the second out, Shylene Hernandez reached on an error, which allowed another run to come across the plate. Anderson then blasted a home run, bringing around the remaining two baserunners and making it 11-10.
UCR put another runner on base as DeAnda was hit by a pitch, bringing up Romero, who led off the inning with a single. Unfortunately, Romero could not come through again, striking out to end the game as the Aggies held on for the victory.
UC Riverside had little time to prepare for its next game, scheduled to face Fresno State immediately following its first game.
The Bulldogs came out of the gate scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. UCR cut the margin in the half in its respective frame, as Wright doubled to right center, scoring Anderson who initially was hit by a pitch to lead off.
The 2-1 score stayed intact until the third inning, when Fresno State scored a single run, and added three more in the fifth, and two in the seventh.
The Highlanders managed just two hits after the first inning, as the Bulldogs' pitcher kept their bats relatively silent.
For the day, Wright had four hits to the lead the team, while Ercolano, Anderson, and Romero all added three.
UC Riverside continues play at the Kajikawa Classic on Sunday with another pair of games, playing Western Michigan at 8 am PT, and facing off against host and #7 nationally ranked Arizona State at 1 pm.
