Long Beach State Claims 65-52 Victory Over UC Riverside Women's Basketball

Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (4-18, 0-9) started the second half of Big West Conference action Saturday afternoon with a 65-52 loss at Long Beach State (box score).
The Highlanders were down by four points after the first half, but the 49ers (13-10, 5-4) quickly made it a double-digit lead less than six minutes into the second period. Each time UC Riverside rallied to within two possessions, LBSU countered with a bucket or two, and UCR never got closer than seven the remainder of the game.
Brittany Crain scored 20 points to lead the Highlanders while Kiara Harewood had 11 points and Natasha Hadley added 10. Simone DeCoud grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Raven Benton led the 49ers with 19 points while Anna Kim had 12, and Madison Montgomery and Lauren Spargo both added 10 points.
In the first half, the teams traded buckets to open the game until the Highlanders turned a 7-7 tie into a 15-9 lead with 7:39 left in the half. Crain scored six of UCR's points during the run while Hadley added a layup, giving the blue and gold its biggest margin of the game.
The 49ers countered, however, scoring six unanswered points to tie the game at 15 just two minutes later. Harewood's free throw at the 5:36 mark gave UCR a one-point lead, but Long Beach State scored 10 of the next 12 points to go up by its biggest margin of the period, 25-18, with 50 seconds remaining.
Crain converted an old fashioned three-point play to make it a 25-21 with 30 seconds to go, as UCR entered the break down by that score. Crain had 12 out of the Highlanders 21 points in the half, while Hadley had six.
Long Beach State outscored UC Riverside 12-6 open the second half, taking a 37-27 advantage with 14:08 left. UCR scored seven of the next nine points to cut the lead back to two possessions, 39-34, capped off by another Crain three-point play.
LBSU quickly pushed the margin back to double-digits, and extended its advantage to 15 with just over a minute left in regulation, taking home the 13-point victory.
For the game, Long Beach State shot 39.4 percent from the field including a 35.0 percent clip from beyond the arc. UC Riverside hit just 32.8 percent but was 0-for-10 from three-point range.
Next up for UC Riverside is a Thursday, February 13 game at Hawai'i. Tip is slated for 9 pm PT in Honolulu.
