Taylor Johns' 20-Point, 11-Rebound Double-Double Not Enough In 88-76 Loss To LBSU

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team enjoyed another spectacular offensive performance Saturday evening as they shot 50.0 percent or better from the field for the third straight game, but Long Beach State matched them basket for basket for an 88-76 victory (Box Score).
Typically, a team that shoots 52.6 percent from the floor during the first half find itself on top heading in the the locker room at halftime. That wasn't the case for the Highlanders Saturday night, as the 49ers countered by making 56.4 percent of their shots in the first 20 minutes of play.
Long Beach State made 11 of its first 12 field goal attempts, including all five of its three-pointers, and jumped out to an 11-point lead, 31-20, with 8:20 gone in the first. Five minutes later, back-to-back threes by Tyler Lamb turned a 12-point 49ers advantage into an 18-point lead, 51-33. UC Riverside cut it to 10 at the half, 58-48, thanks to Taylor Johns and Sam Finley who combined to score 27 points on 12 of 20 shooting.
Lamb scored 14 points in the first making all five of his shots form the floor including all three from long distance. Branford Jones added nine on three-of-three shooting from beyond the arc, and A.J. Spencer scored eight. As a team, the 49ers made nine of 13 from three-point range in the first.
Spencer scored the first points of the second half to put Long Beach back up by 12, but the Highlanders scored nine of the next 11 to slice the lead to five with 15:55 remaining. Three different players scored during the run for UC Riverside led by Chris Patton's four.
It was still a five-point game, 69-64, when a Patton jumper in the paint pulled the Highlanders to within three, but that was as close as they would get as the 49ers went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes and 21 seconds to effectively end the game.
Johns finished with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double—his sixth of the season. Finley finished with 17, reaching double figures for the 12th straight game, while Patton added 12.
Lamb scored a game-high 23 points while Spencer chipped in with 16. The 49ers made 12 of 23 shots from three-point range, and Dan Jennings grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds
