Irvine, CA--The UC Riverside Baseball Team dropped its second straight game to start Big West play, Saturday afternoon, falling 4-2 at UC Irvine (box score).
Highlanders (11-12, 0-2) starter Zach Varela retired the first six batters he faced, but he allowed a lead-off single to Ryan Cassolato to start the bottom of the third. One batter later, Grant Palmer reached on a fielding error by UCR shortstop Nick Vilter which moved Cassolato to third. Varela recorded the second out on a pop up to short, but Chris Rabago singled to left to make it 1-0 Anteaters.
UC Irvine (18-8, 2-0) pitcher Elliot Surrey kept the Highlanders off the board through the first three innings, but UC Riverside took the lead in the top of the fourth. Francisco Tellez reached with one out on a single up the middle, and with two outs, David Andriese reached on an error by the left fielder which put runners on second and third. Thomas Walker's single up the middle plated two, and the Highlanders led 2-1.
That lead didn't last long, however, as Varela issued a lead-off walk in the bottom of the fourth to Taylor Sparks. A fly ball to deep center allowed Sparks to advance to second, and Jerry McClannahan singled through the left side to tie the score.
The 'Eaters regained the lead one inning later, as Palmer and Kris Paulino opened the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles putting runners at the corners. After Rabago lined out to second, a Connor Spencer single made it 3-2 Irvine, and a Sparks double put the Anteaters up by two..
The Highlanders put runners on base in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings, but failed to score.
Surrey picked up his third win of the season going 6.2 innings while striking out five and allowing just six hits. Jimmy Litchfield threw a scoreless inning of relief, and Sam Moore pitched the final 1.1 innings for his 11th save of the season.
Varela took the loss for UC Riverside ending a streak of eight straight victories.
The Highlanders and Anteaters play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday, March 30 beginning at 1 pm PT.
