Softball's Four-Game Win Streak Comes To An End With 6-3 Loss To San Diego
3/8/2014 12:03:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team had its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 loss to San Diego in the Highlander Classic at Amy S. Harrison Field. Box Score.
UCR got on board first using a two-out rally in the second to score two.
Sommer Wilson got plunked to lead off the inning, and moved to second after Ashley Ercolano singled to right field. Both runners moved up a base on a Shylene Helms sac bunt, and with two outs, Kris DeAnda singled to drive in the first run. A batter later, Dionne Anderson singled to left field driving in the second run for the 2-0 advantage.
The Torreros were quick to counter scoring two in the top of the third to tie the game, 2-2. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mary Grabowski singled to right field driving in a pair. Both runs were unearned, however, as the Highlanders defense committed an error earlier in the inning, prolonging USD's at bat.
In the fourth, USD added four runs to go up 6-2. Two hit by pitches by UCR starter Alyssa Razo followed by a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out. Chloe Kaneko then doubled to right field, driving in three and ending Razo's day.
Sophie Slagle came in to pitch, and after getting the second out of the inning, allowed a Grabowski single to drive in the fourth run for the 6-2 margin.
The Highlanders loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth on a single, walk, and Torrero error. With one out, Haley Harris drew a walk to send Stephanie Tickemyer home, cutting the lead to 6-3.
It looked as if UC Riverside would get another run across as Natalie Sanchez fouled out to left field, but the runner on third, DeAnda, was called out for leaving early.
Slagle gave up just one hit the rest of the way to prevent any additional USD runs, and the game entered the seventh still at 6-3.
In the bottom of that frame, the Highlanders had the tying run at the plate following a single and a walk with one out. Unfortunately, the next two batters both got out to give the Torreros the win.
