Late Rally Falls Short As San Diego Hangs On For 3-2 Win Over Softball
3/9/2014 3:11:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team concluded play at the Highlander Classic on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to San Diego. Box Score.
Similar to its first game of the day, UCR fell behind early giving up two Torrero runs in the first inning. With two outs and a runner on third, Mary Grabowski singled to right field for the initial score, and the next batter, Olivia Sandusky, doubled to right center driving in Grabowski, 2-0.
The Highlanders cut the margin in half in the bottom of the first, also using a two-out rally. With Karina Romero on first after drawing a walk, Natalie Sanchez doubled to left center to drive her home.
San Diego got that run back in the second as UCR starting pitcher Sophie Slagle walked four batters. That ended her day, and Alyssa Razo came on to pitch for the Highlanders.
Razo got out of the frame unscathed, and gave up five hits through the next five innings as USD stranded six base runners.
Meanwhile, the Highlanders threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Dionne Anderson led off with a triple, and came home on a Haley Harris sac fly. UC Riverside was unable to capitalize any further, however, leaving runners at first and second to end the inning down 3-2.
In the seventh, the Highlanders were down to their last out as the first two batters struck out. Pinch-hitter Marissa Escalante breathed some life into the club as she drew a walk to extend the inning, but UCR's rally went no further as Anderson fouled out for the final out of the game.
The Highlanders have a few days off before hosting a doubleheader against Farleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, March 12 starting at 1 pm PT at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside.
