San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team fought back from a 6-1 deficit Tuesday evening to put the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second with two outs in the top of the ninth, but San Diego State closer Michael Cederoth got Thomas Walker to ground out to short as the Aztecs escaped with the 6-5 victory (Box Score).
Jodan Kron (1-5) got the first start of his collegiate career for the Highlanders, allowing three hits and two walks in two innings. The Aztecs also bennefited from a pair of UC Riverside errors to score four runs in the first two innings.
Angel Landazuri took over to start the third for the Highlanders and retired the first six batters he faced to keep UC Riverside close. Unfortunately, San Diego State starter Cody Thompson (5-2) kept UCR (14-18) off the board through the first five innings, allowing just one hit and three walks.
The Aztecs (26-11) got to Landazuri in the bottom of the fifth as Brad Haynal drilled a two-run homer to right with two outs in the frame to take a six-run lead.
The Highlanders chased Thompson in their half of the sixth as David Andriese reached on a two-out double, and Walker singled to right cutting the San Diego State lead to five, 6-1.
UC Riverside continued to feast on the Aztecs relief corps the following inning. Justin Hepner, who closed out the top of the sixth, put two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh. Brandon Thomas took over for Hepner, and Francisco Tellez greeted him with a single to left which scored Joe Chavez. The next batter, Nick Vilter ripped a three-run homer run over the left field fence to cut the San Diego State advantage to one. It was the ninth home run of the season for the junior infielder, but his first since a March 9 blast against West Virginia.
Joie Dunyon and Angelo Lingos threw scoreless frames in the sixth, seventh and eighth for the Highlanders, and UC Riverside entered the ninth trailing by one with the meat of the order coming up.
Cederoth came on in relief for the Aztecs with one out in the eighth, and returned for the ninth trying to close out his 13th save of the season. He got Devyn Bolasky to fly out to left to start the inning, but walked Tellez to put the tying run on base. Vilter struck out to put San Diego State one out away from the win, but Andriese reached on an error by shortstop Evan Potter. That allowed Tellez to move to third and Andriese to advance to second.
The Aztecs opted to pitch to Walker rather than intentionally walk him to set up a force at every base. Cederoth got ahead of Walker 0-2, and Walker grounded his third offering to short for the final out of the game.
The Highlanders return home this weekend for a three-game Big West Conference series vs.UC Davis.
