Baseball Can't Hold Lead, Falls 6-5 At UC Santa Barbara
4/26/2014 5:14:00 PM | Baseball
Santa Barbara, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team jumped out to an early lead Saturday afternoon, but UC Santa Barbara fought back for the eventual 6-5 victory (Box Score).
The Highlanders came out bats blazing in the first inning as Devyn Blasky laced a one out single to left, and advanced to second on an errant pick off attempt by the pitcher. Francisco Telez followed with his third home run of the season over the wall in right field. Nick Vilter and David Andriese then drew back-to-back walks, and a wild pitch moved both runners up 90 feet. Thomas Walker's ground out to third scored Vilter to put the Highlanders up 3-0.
UC Riverside starter Zach Varela didn't allow a hit through his first two innings of work, but the Gauchos touched him for three hits and three runs in the bottom of the third. Campbell Wear led off the frame with a single back to the mound, and Woody Woodward beat out a single to short. After a Peter Maris sacrifice bunt, Varela walked Joey Epperson to load the bases. Tyler Kuresa lifted a sacrifice fly to center, and Robby Nesovic singled to left center to tie the score.
The Highlanders regained the lead the very next inning, thanks in part to a series of UC Santa Barbara defensive miscues. With Walker on first and one out, Drake Zarate singled to left. Left fielder Cameron Newell misplayed the ball allowing Walker to advance to third and Zarate to move to second. A Matt Ellis single to right scored Walker to put UC Riverside back on top, 4-3.
Cody Hough then hit a grounder that second baseman Woodward fielded cleanly and tried to get the force at second, but his throw was off the mark allowing Zarate to score to make it 5-3 Highlanders.
Varela kept the Gauchos off the board in the fourth and the fifth, but UCSB cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth as Wear's double to left center scored Newell, who reached on a single down the left field line.
Angel Landazuri took over for Varela to start the bottom of the seventh, and he was greeted by back-to-back singles by Kuresa and Nesovic. Devon Gradford then tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but Hough committed an error on the play allowing Kuresa to score with the tying run. Two batters later, Newell grounded out to second, scoring Nesovic to put Santa Barbara up 6-5.
Tate Dillon pitched a pair of scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth striking out the final two batters for his 10th save of the season.
The Highlanders and Gauchos complete their three-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
