Long Beach, CA - The UC Riverside Softball Team (19-18, 0-4) opened its three-game series at Long Beach State on Saturday with an 8-0 loss in five innings. The 49ers (27-9), who are receiving votes in the latest national poll, scored two runs in the first inning, and three each in the third and fifth to end the game early with the eight-run mercy rule. Box Score.
The Highlanders had an opportunity to get one on the board in the top of the first, as Dionne Anderson led off with a single and advanced to second on Karina Romero's sac bunt. With two outs, Haley Harris singled to centerfield, but as Anderson attempted to slide into home plate, she was tagged out from the throw from outfield.
In the bottom of that frame, Long Beach State used a one-out triple from Cya Neal followed by an RBI single from Hannah De Gaetano to get the first run across. With runners at first and second with two outs, Sarah Carrasco's single to left field plated the runner from second for the 2-0 lead.
UCR stranded two runners on base in the second inning, and was retired in order in the third.
The 49ers added on to their lead in the bottom of the third thanks to three hits and a UCR error.
Two singles sandwiched around an error loaded the bases for LBSU, and an RBI fielder's choice from Ashley Holmes scored the runner from third. Ashlynn Booker then singled to right field to score two more as the Long Beach lead increased to 5-0.
The Highlanders couldn't get a runner past second base in the fourth and fifth innings, while the 49ers tacked on insurance runs in the fifth.
Karli Sandoval doubled to lead off the frame, and came home on a single from Darian Tautalafua. UCR got the next two batters out, but the 49ers used a two-out rally to score two more runs. Booker doubled to bring Tautalafua across, and a walk followed by another single scored the final run as LBSU stopped the game with two runners on base in the fifth.
Alyssa Razo was saddled with the loss for UC Riverside, giving up five runs in 2.2 innings of work. Erin Jones-Wesley claimed the victory for Long Beach, her 15th of the season.
