San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team put 18 runners on base Tuesday evening at San Diego State, but stranded 14 of them as the Aztecs picked up a 4-3 win (box score coming soon).
The Highlanders (14-14) threatened in the top of the first loading the bases with one out, but Aztecs starter TJ Kendzora got David Andriese to fly out to left, and Thomas Walker lined out to short to end the threat.
Antonio Gonzales got the start for the Highlanders, and San Diego State (25-8) touched him for two runs in the bottom of the first.
UC Riverside got a run back in the top of the second when Drake Zarate led off the inning with a double, and after a Matt Ellis sac bunt, Cody Hough singled Zarate home from third. The Highlanders tied the game in the top of the fourth as Joe Chavez's double down the left field line scored Ellis from second.
Jordan Kron (1-4) took over for Gonzales in the second and logged his longest outing of the season going three innings. He kept the Aztecs off the board in the second and third, but in the fourth Seby Zavala ripped a 1-0 offering over the left field wall to give San Diego State the lead, 3-2.
The Aztecs made it 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Andrew Brown led off the inning with a single to right off of new UCR reliever Dylan Stuart, and moved to second on a balk. One out later, Evan Potter singled to right moving Brown to third, and a Greg Allen sac fly to right sent him home.
Both teams traded zeroes over the next three innings, although the Highlanders had their opportunities. They loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, and stranded single runners in the seventh and eighth.
San Diego State closer Michael Cederoth came on in the ninth and struck out Devyn Bolasky, but he then issued back-to-back walks to Nick Vilter and Andriese. Walker singled to left to cut the Aztecs lead to one, but Cederoth struck out Zarate and Ellis to end the game.
Michael Robards (3-3) was credited with the win throwing three-and-a-third innings of shutout ball.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend traveling to Oregon for a three-game series with the Ducks.
