5/7/2014 12:14:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—UC Riverside Baseball pitcher Zach Varela is in his junior season with the blue and gold, and we here at gohighlanders.com got to know him a little better this spring via our Highlander Highlights series.

Zach ...
... throws right-handed
... is a redshirt junior from Wildomar, CA
... is a philosophy major
... is Native American
... wants to go to law school
... lives by the quote "Don't take life too seriously, you'll never make it out alive."
... will not eat bologna
Zach has never left the United States.
One thing that he misses the most about his childhood is watching Saturday morning cartoons.
If Zach could witness any event, he would want to witness when man landed on the moon. He can't imagine the view looking back down on Earth.
One thing he wants to learn how to do is to sail.
Zach believes the secret to a great life is never accepting being mediocre. He claims, "We weren't made to be average; we were made to be the best. That's why we are so competitive."
