9/5/2014 7:12:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Cedar City, UT - The UC Riverside Volleyball Team looked to make it two wins in a row Friday evening following a 3-1 defeat of Maryland-Eastern Shore earlier in the day (box score/recap), but the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (5-0) swept the Highlanders (1-4) in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, and 25-13. Box Score.
In the first set, UCR led early on, 7-5, after scoring three straight on an Alex Gresham kill and consecutive Bri Holmes kills. SUU countered and went on a 9-0 run while scoring 13 of the next 14 points to take a 18-8 advantage.
UC Riverside got within seven, 21-14, but that was as close as they got as the Tbirds went on for the 25-16 win.
The next frame, the Highlanders again fell behind, 13-5, but rallied to within one, 14-13, outscoring Southern Utah 8-1 thanks to kills by Gresham, Fabiana Rosas, and Cristina Maietta. The teams traded points until UCR tied it twice at 17-17 and 18-18, but SUU scored the final seven of nine points taking a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 victory.
The Thunderbirds used another run in set three to secure their victory, turning an 8-5 lead into a 14-5 advantage. The differential was too much for UCR to make up, as SUU continued its unbeaten mark to start the 2014 season with a 25-13 win.
Ashley Cox led the Highlanders will seven kills during the match.
UC Riverside concludes the SUU Tournament Saturday morning facing Savannah State at 9:30 am PT in Cedar City.
