Makau & Totten's 1-2 Finish Leads Women's Cross Country to 2nd Straight Title

Riverside, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Cross Team successfully defended its title at the fourth annual Highlander Invitiational Saturday morning at the Ag/Ops Course, led by Faith Makau's first place finish and Weslie Totten in second.

The Highlanders finished with 70 points as a team to repeat as champions amongst the ten teams competing this year. San Diego State finished in second place with 81 points, followed by USC in third (87), and Cal State Fullerton in fourth (91).Â
Makau completed the 5k in 17:17.63, just .09 seconds ahead of fellow Highlander Weslie Totten, who set a personal record Saturday morning with a time of 17:17.72.
Five Highlanders finished in the top 30 out of over 100 runners, Dominique Dowell was 15th, followed by Briana Simmons in 26th, Emily Sanchez in 28th, and Christina Shamirian finished 85th.
Men's Cross Country senior Cody Jordan finished second at fourth annual Highlander Invitational Saturday morning in a personal record time of 17:43.8. The Highlanders as a team finished sixth.
Long Beach State took home this year's Men's title with 49 points, Central Arizona came in second at 63 points while Cal State Fullerton was third with 76, and UC Irvine fourth at 96.

Jordan acheived his new personal best 6k mark by finshing 17 seconds ahead of last year's time.
Solomon Demeku-Ousman finished in eighth, giving the Highlanders two runners within the top-10. Aaron Nguyen was 30th, Garrett Hernandez finished 42nd, follolwed by Ryan Klachko 47th, John Green 53rd, and Douglas Castro 58th.
UC Riverside now has two weeks to prepare for the 2015 Big West Conference Championship scheduled for Saturday, October 31 at 8:30 am at the Ag/Ops Course in Riverside.
