Baseball Improves To 3-0 With Double Header Sweep Of Portland

Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team ran its record to 3-0 on the season with a double header sweep of Portland Saturday afternoon.

Angel Landazuri (1-0) picked up the win in the first game of the twinbill scattering five hits over six-and-two-thirds innings. Gabe Gertner, Ryan Llillie and Joie Dunyon combined to allow just one hit in two-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.

The Highlanders got on the board in the bottom of the second as Mark Contreras opened the frame with a triple to left. Grant Taylor appeared to lose the ball in the sun, and the ball bounced away towards the left field line. Alex Rubanowitz then doubled down the right field line to put UC Riverside on top 1-0.

Casey Henderson was hit by a pitch, and after Austin Colvin sacrificed him to third, Edgar Morales was hit by a pitch, and Joe Chavez fouled out to first base scoring Henderson.

The Highlanders made it a 5-0 game in the bottom of the fifth getting three consecutive singles off the bats of Morales, Chavez and Robby Witt. Vince Fernadez's double to right scored a pair and Drake Zarate's single gave Landazuri and company a five-run cushion.

The Pilots scratched out a run in the top of the seventh thanks to a Cody Lenahan double and an RBI single by Davis Tominaga.

Rubanowitz ended the scoring in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double that scored Contreras from first.

In the nightcap, the Highlanders trailed 3-2 through six innings, but exploded for three runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to secure the win.

Keaton Leach tossed five-and-two-thirds innings of relief to earn his first victory of the season giving up six hits while striking out seven.

UCR took advantage of four Portland errors in the game plating a pair of unearned runs off of Pilots starter Cole Doherty. The Highlanders then scored six runs off of the Portland bullpen.

The last time UC Riverside won its first three games of the season was in 2010, when they began the year 4-0.
