Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team was hoping to salvage a split in its four-game series with San Diego State on Sunday, but a series of defensive miscues and a tough day on the mound helped the Aztecs to a 12-6 victory.
The Highlanders (5-3) used seven pitchers in all, Sunday, allowing 19 hits and six walks while throwing 186 pitches. Cody Rogina got the start, lasting just one-and-a-third innings as the Aztecs jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the top of the second.
UC Riverside tried to claw its way back into the game plating two runs in the bottom of the second, but San Diego State hung a four spot on the board in the top of the fourth to effectively put the game out of reach.
Five different Aztecs (7-1) had multiple hits on the day, and Andrew Brown and Alan Trejo each had four apiece. Drake Zarate and Matthew Ellis each drove in a pair of runs for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside hosts Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, February 24 for a 6 pm PT first pitch at The Plex.
