Box Score 2 Riverside- The UC Riverside Softball Team continues its win streak, winning all five games over the weekend including a sweep of San Diego, 6-7 in eight innings and 10-2 in five on Sunday afternoon.
With an 11-4 overall record, the Highlanders are off to their best start since the 2006 season when UC Riverside won 12 of their first 15 games.
In game one against the Toredos, freshman Rebecca Faulkner recorded her first win for the Highlanders, taking the mound in the eighth inning, relieving Chelsea Ponce who pitched the seven previous innings.
After making a seven-inning, three-run offensive effort, San Diego forced the extra frame, pushing across one run at the top of the eighth and taking the lead 6-5. With Taylor Wright starting on second in the bottom of the inning, Stephanie Tickemyer took to the plate, delivering a single to right field, scoring Wright to tie the game 6-6. The Highlanders would then find themselves with bases loaded and one out. With a huge momentum shift, the Highlanders put the winning run across the plate on a wild pitch by San Diego's Grace Hernandez.
UC Riverside took control of the batter's box in game two of the day, registering 10 hits to San Diego's five and ending the game in five innings due to a run rule. Tayler Misfeldt notched her first win of the season pitching all five frames with three strikeouts. Catcher Natalie Sanchez put the exclamation point on the Highlanders' weekend smashing two home runs to left center. Sanchez is the first Highlander to hit two home runs in a single-game since Kaylie Atkinson recorded two against Cal State Fullerton in 2012.
For Feb. 20-22 UC Riverside's 5-0 record was the best performance by any Big West team for the weekend.
The Highlanders are back in actions Wednesday, Feb. 25, hosting St. John's for a single game at 2 pm PT.
