Box Score Pullman, WA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team got back on the winning track Saturday with a 4-1 road win over Washington State. Game four of the four-game series between the teams is slated for Sunday at 11 am PT.
The Highlanders (6-6) jumped on top in the first inning for the second straight day as Dante Chupek reached on an error, Alex Rubanowitz singled through the right side, and Drake Zarate beat out a bunt to put UCR up, 1-0.
It remained a one-run game until the Highlanders' half of the fourth. Vince Fernandez led off the frame with a walk, and an Austin Colvin ground out moved Fernandez up 90 feet. Mark Contreras was hit by a pitch, and Matthew Ellis singled up the middle scoring Fernandez.
After Robby Witt drew a walk to load the bases, Chupek's fielder's choice grounder to short off of relief pitcher Ryan Walker put UC Riverside up 3-0.
The Highlanders took advantage of another hit batsmen the very next inning as Joe Chavez was plunked with one out. He came around to score two pitches later as Fernandez doubled to left field to make it a four-run game.
Meanwhile, UC Riverside starter Jesus Gonzalez and the Highlanders defense were bending but not breaking. The Cougars (6-5) put runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings, but Gonzalez and company kept Washington State off the board on each occasion.
Gonzalez walked two of the first three batters he faced to start the bottom of the fifth, and was lifted in favor of Jared Morton (1-0). Not only did Morton retire the next two batters to get out of the inning, but he retired eight straight Cougars, handing the game to Gabe Gentner in the bottom of the eighth.
Washington State pushed one run across in the eighth, but Ryan Lillie worked a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season.
