Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team's offense came alive Sunday afternoon, snapping a four-game losing streak with a 25-0 victory over visiting North Dakota. That is the most runs the Highlanders have scored since they topped UC Davis 26-7 on May 29, 2010
UC Riverside scored 11 runs in their previous four games, but they staked started Kevin Sprague (2-3) to a 2-0 lead in the first. North Dakota starter Brett DeGagne walked the first two batters he faced, and a wild pitch moved Vince Fernandez and Drake Zarate up 90 feet. One batter later, Robby Witt's single up the middle played two to put UC Riverside on top.
It remained a 2-0 game until the bottom of the fourth, when Zarate laced a bases-loaded double to left center putting the Highlanders up 5-0.
UC Riverside (8-12) scored five more in the fifth, three in the sixth, and six runs each in the seventh and eighth against seven North Dakota (4-9) pitchers..
Meanwhile, Sprague allowed just four hits in his seven innings of work, striking out four while walking one. Cody Rogina pitched a scoreless eighth striking out a pair, and Peter Beattie finished the game with a scoreless ninth.
In all, the Highlanders banged out 21 hits, drew nine walks, and were hit by five pitches. Twelve different players recorded at least one hit, while Zarate drove in five runs, Wiit drove in four, and Cody Sporrer scored four.
The Highlanders are off for the next several days for final exams, returning to The Plex on Friday for the first game in a three-game series with Tulane. First pitch Friday is 6 pm PT.
