Jordan Abernathy's Infield Single In The 13th Gives Baseball 2-1 Win Over Tulane

Riverside—Jordan Abernathy's infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 13th scored Vince Fernandez from third base, sending UC Riverside Baseball fans home happy with a 2-1 win over visiting Tulane.

Angel Landazuri got the start for the Highlanders (9-12) and retired the first 16 batters he faced. The offense staked him to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Mark Contreras's single to left scored Fernandez.

Landazuri struck out 13 in his eight innings of work, but the Green Wave's (16-6) Lex Kaplan drove a 2-2 offering in the top of the eighth over the right field fence to tie the score.

Ryan Lillie pitched two scoreless innings striking out five, and Joie Dunyon worked two-and-two-thirds K'ing a pair to give UC Riverside 20 strikeouts as a staff.

Gabe Gentner pitched the final two thirds to secure his third win of the season.

Ian Gibaut (4-2) was the hard luck loser for the Green Wave. He pitched three-and-two-thirds innings of relief, but tired in the 13th allowing a lead-off single to Fernandez, and plunking Joe Chavez to put runners on first and second. Drake Zarate then singled to left center loading the bases.

Dan Rankin took over for Gibaut, and Tulane brought their left fielder, Garrett Deschamp, as a fifth infielder between shortstop and the second base bag. Abernathy hit a sharp grounder to Deschamp, who was unable to get the ball out of his glove to make the play at the plate, and the Highlanders mobbed Abernathy in shallow right field.

Corey Merrill got the start for the Green Wave, and nearly matched Landazuri pitch-for-pitch, allowing four hits and striking out seven in eight innings.
