San Francisco, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team scored three runs in the top of the 15th Saturday afternoon to pick up a 6-3 win over San Francisco.
The teams entered extra innings tied at two as the Dons erased a 2-0 deficit with single runs in the sixth and eighth. UCR (7-8) relief pitcher Joie Dunyon tossed a scoreless ninth and tenth, and in the top of the 11th, Alex Rubanowitz drove in Austin Colvin with a double to right to put the Highlanders up 3-2.
Dunyon came out for his third inning of work, and gave up a lead off single to Manny Ramirez. Blake Valley entered the game as a pinch runner, and moved to second on a sac bunt by Ryan Matranga. Valley then stole third, and Drake Zarate's throw was off the mark which allowed Valley to tie the score.
Gabe Gentner (1-0) took over on the mound for the Highlanders in the 12th, and he retired all nine batters he faced over the next three innings to keep the score tied at three.
UC Riverside finally broke through in the top of the 15th. Zarate drew a walk to open the inning, and Joe Chavez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Zarate to second. Dons reliever Sam Granoff fielded the bunt, but his throw got past Ramirez at first, and the Highlanders had runners on second and third with nobody out.
Anthony Buonopane took over for Granoff, and Vince Fernandez greeted him with a single scoring Zarate and Chavez. A sac bunt and a single put runners at the corners, and Austin Colvin's ground out scored Fernandez from third.
UC Riverside closer Ryan Lillie came on in the bottom of the 15th, and worked out of a first-and-second, one-out jam to record his third save of the season.
The Highlanders and Dons finish their three-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
