San Francisco, CA—San Francisco broke open a close, 3-1 game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth Sunday afternoon, eventually winning the rubber match of the three-game series with the Highlanders, 10-1.
The Dons scored single runs in the first three innings off of UC Riverside starter Jesus Gonzalez while San Francisco starter Jeider Rincon allowed just one hit through his first four innings of work, The Highlanders got to Rincon (1-2) in the top of the fifth as Austin Colvin led off the frame with a double to left, and Drake Zarate's single to right made it a 3-1 ballgame.
Kevin Sprague pitched a scoreless fourth, but in the Dons half of the fifth, San Francisco (3-12) touched him for three singles, a double and a triple to take a 7-1 lead.
The Highlanders (7-9) put two runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth, but couldn't score, and were retired in order in the top of the seventh. They put single runners on base in the eighth and ninth, but Dons relief pitchers Brock Larson and Mack Meyer kept UC Riverside off the board.
Meanwhile, San Francisco scored one run in the seventh and two in the eighth for the final nine run margin of victory.
The Highlanders return home this week for four games beginning with a Tuesday, March 10 meeting with Bakersfield at 6 pm PT. Over the weekend, UC Riverside hosts North Dakota for a three-game set on Friday, March 13 at 6 pm, Saturday, March 14 at 6 pm and Sunday, March 15 at 1 pm.
