Long Beach, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team battled Long Beach State into extra innings Saturday afternoon, but an error with two outs in the bottom of the 10th allowed the Beach to escape with a 4-3 victory.
Ryan Lillie (0-3) came out for his second inning of the work to start the 10th, and he gave up back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Tristan Mercadel grounded out to second, and David Banuelos was caught stealing for out number two. Zack Dominguez then hit a grounder to short for what should have been the final out of the inning, but Joe Chavez couldn't handle it, allowing Joey Sanchez to score the winning run.
The Highlanders sent the game into extra innings by battling back from a 3-1 deficit. Tony Gudino's single in the fourth scored Alex Rubanowitz, who doubled to right to open the inning. Gudino was involved in the tying run as well, leading off the seventh with a double to left, and eventually scoring on a Chavez sacrifice fly.
The 49ers touched Highlanders' starter Kevin Sprague for three runs in his first three innings of work, but he settled down over his final three frames to keep UC Riverside in the game. Matthew Ellis pitched a scoreless seventh, and Jared Morton did likewise in the eighth before handing the game over to Lillie in the ninth.
Long Beach State starter Tanner Brown allowed all three UCR runs, giving up seven hits and a walk over his six-and-a-third innings. The 49ers pen gave up just one hit the rest of the way, and relief pitcher Ty Provencher (3-1) was credited with the win.
UC Riverside and Long Beach State conclude their three-game Big West Conference series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
