Baseball Drops Rubber Match At Long Beach State, 10-1

Long Beach, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team had hopes of picking up its first Big West series victory of the season Sunday afternoon, having split the first two games of its three-game set with Long Beach State, but the 49ers scored runs in each of the first four innings en route to a 10-1 win over the Highlanders.

Angelo Lingos (0-2) made his first start of the season for UC Riverside (11-26, 1-8) after eight relief appearances, but he only lasted one-and-a-third innings. Struggling with his control in the first, Lingos gave up four runs on three hits, two walks and a pair of wild pitches.

The 49ers (21-14, 7-5) tacked on two runs in the second, third and fourth off of Lingos, Peter Beattie and Max Compton to build a 10-0 lead.

Gabe Gentner finally stemmed the tide, keeping the 49ers off the board in the fifth and sixth, and Jordan Kron did likewise in the seventh and eighth, but the Highlanders were unable to solve Long Beach State starter Chris Mathewson (5-3). Mathewson entered the game with a 1.49 ERA, and allowed just four base hits over eight innings before handing the game over to Tyler Radcliffe in the ninth.

Radcliffe failed to record an out, however, as he gave up a pair of singles and a walk to load the bases. Logan Lombana took over for Radcliffe, allowing the Highlanders' first run of the game on a Alex Rubanowitz fielder's choice, but Ryan Lillie's ground out ended the game.

UC Riverside returns home on Tuesday for a 3 pm PT first pitch against visiting UNLV, before heading to CSUN over the weekend for a three-game series with the Matadors.
