Riverside--The UC Riverside Baseball Team rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth, and had the tying run on third base, but couldn't bring him home as Cal Poly escaped with a 7-6 victory Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 7-4 with just three outs remaining, the Highlanders' Adonis Morrison opened the ninth with a grounder to short, but first baseman Ryan Drobny couldn't handle the throw allowing Morrison to reach. Jordan Abernathy then beat out an infield single, and a Dante Chupek ground out put runners on the corners. Edgar Morales' single up the middle scored Morrison, and Robby Witt's pinch-hit single down the left field line loaded the bases.
Mark Contreras' sac fly to center scored Chupek, and cut the Mustangs (25-25, 12-8) advantage to one with two outs, but Austin Colvin grounded the first pitch he saw to first, and Drobny stepped on the bag for the final out of the game.
Joie Dunyon (1-4) took the loss for UC Riverside (13-38, 2-18) allowing eight hits over 7.1 innings. Kyle Smith tossed seven innings for Cal Poly, leaving the game as the pitcher of record, but the Highlanders scored three runs off of Taylor Chris (3-2), who vultured the win.
The Highlanders and Mustangs complete their three-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.Â
