Women's Soccer Evens Record With 3-1 Victory Over Liberty

Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team evened its record at 1-1 on the young season Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Liberty in the Fullerton Tournament presented by Embassy Suites-Brea N. Orange County (view highlights).

The Highlanders controlled the pace of play Friday evening, outshooting George Washington 15-8, but fell to the Colonials 1-0 in overtime. They were determined not to make the same mistake twice, and Sunday they got on top early as Brittany Mata collected a long Blanca Barrio cross just inside the Flames' 18  in the 14th minute of play, and beat the keeper to the near post.

UC Riverside made it 2-0 with less than three minutes to go before intermission when Marriah Perez corralled the deflection of a Danielle Lopez shot for her first score of the year.

Tyler Cunningham added an insurance goal for the Highlanders in the 81st minute off of a Barrio corner kick.

Unfortunately UC Riverside couldn't hold on to the shutout as Liberty's Brittany Aanderud scored with less than a minute to go.

UCR outshot the Flames 24-8 on the day. That is the most shots for a UC Riverside squad since last year's version took 29 against Bakersfield on September 12.

The Highlanders return to the Inland Empire this week for the home opener against USC Friday beginning at 7 pm PT. There is a poster giveaway and autograph signing scheduled for after the match.
