Berkeley, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team gave nationally-ranked Cal all it could handle Friday afternoon, outshooting the Golden Bears 12-6, but Samantha Witteman's put back of an Ifaoma Onumonu errant shot proved to be the lone score of the match in a 1-0 Cal victory.
The Highlanders were looking to pick up their third-ever win against a ranked opponent at #16 Cal, and the play was even throughout the first half. Despite each team taking six shots throughout the first 45 minutes, Witteman found the back of the net in the 28th minute of play to give the Golden Bears the lead.
After the intermission it was all UC Riverside as the Highlanders took six shots in the period, and had five corner kicks to the Golden Bears' two. However Cal keeper Emily Boyd and the rest of the Golden Bears defense was up to the task, as they turned back each of the UCR's advances and held on for the 1-0 shutout win.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend as they travel to LMU on Sunday, September 13 beginning at 1:30 pm.
