Santa Clara, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team was looking to extend its two-match winning streak on the road Friday evening as the Highlanders traveled to Santa Clara, but it was the Broncos who netted two first-half goals en route to a 2-1 victory.
UCR entered the match fresh off of a 2-1 overtime victory at #8 UCLA, but Santa Clara jumped on top early as Carlos DelGadillo scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the fourth minute of play.
The Highlanders struck back just over 17 minutes later as Norberto Ochoa scored his fourth goal in three matches, finding the top right corner to knot the game at one.
DelGadillo broke the tie in the 34th minute after stealing an errant pass in the Highlanders defensive end, beating UCR keeper Vincent Morales for the 2-1 lead.
That lead held up throughout the remainder of the match, as UC Riverside played a man down over the last five minutes when Jacob Arietta was issued a red card.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend as they travel to St. Mary's for a Sunday, September 20 meeting with the Gaels at 3 pm PT.
