Box Score Bakersfield, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team shutout CSU Bakersfield 3-0 Sunday evening to record its second consecutive clean sheet of the year, and improve to 4-2-0.
Both defenses were on display in a scoreless first half as the Highlanders held the Roadrunners without a single shot in the first 45 minutes, while UC Riverside managed five shots but just one on goal.
All that changed in the second half, though, as the Highlanders (4-2-0) exploded for three scores in the span of 16 minutes. The first came off the foot of Tyler Cunningham as Alexa Bustamante found her in the 64th minute of play for her third goal of the season.
Less than seven minutes later, Kyra Taylor scored the first goal of her collegiate career off of a pass from Brittany Mata. Bustamante picked up her third goal of the season with 9:10 remaining in the match when Blanca Barrio found her on a corner kick.
The Highlanders' defense held up its end of the bargain down the stretch, turning away five CSUB shots in the final 45 minutes of play.
The win was the third straight for UC Riverside, marking the first time since the 2009 campaign that a Highlanders squad has won three straight matches.
UC Riverside remains on the road this week with a Friday, September 11 trip to Cal, and a Sunday September 13 visit to LMU.
