Box Score Phoenix, AZ—Brittany Crain and Rejane Verin each recorded 20-point, 10-rebound double doubles earlier this season. Saturday at Grand Canyon University they each had 20 points and 10 rebounds in leading the Highlanders to an, 85-67, win in the final non-conference game of the season.
At the end of the first quarter UCR (7-7) was ahead 25-15, on the strength of 50 percent shooting from the field and doubling up Grand Canyon University (7-8) on the boards, 12-6.
Crain and Verin had six points and four rebounds apiece. Jessica Gajewski scored 11 of the Lopes 15 points.
With a 1;07 to play in the secod period, leading 42-27, the Highlanders got a three from Clemence Lefebrve and a layup from Verin for the final points of the half.
At the break UCR led 47-27.
Verin had 12 points and three blocks, Crain tallied nine points and eight rebounds, while Annelise Ito chipped in with eight points. Jessica Gajewski paced the Lopes with 13 first half points, and connected on three triples.
The Lopes opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run forcing a UCR timeout. Gajewski had five points in the run for GCU.
UCR responded with a run of their own, 7-0. In the run they got layups from Crain and Verin to go along with an old fashioned three-point play by Ito that pushed the lead back up to 20 at, 56-36.
Back-to-back threes from Akilah Martin and Simone DeCoud punctuated the third period and gave the Highlanders a 72-46 lead heading into the fourth and final period.
In the fourth period the Lopes closed the distance on the Highlanders, but were unable to catch-up as the UCR held on for the, 85-67, win.
Crain and Verin's 20-10 double doubles led the Highlanders, who got also 16 points, seven rebounds, and five assists from Ito.
Gajewski's 23 points led three Lopes in double figures. Courtney Hayes had 15 points and Cheyenne Hendrington scored 13.
The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team begins conference play Thursday, January 7th on ESPN3 at home against UC Irvine at 5 pm.
