Gillis Finishes Top-5, UCR A Team Sixth, B Team Seventh

Beaumont—The final round of the UCR Winter Intercollegiate was a battle against the course and as well as the elements. Sam Gillis earned his second top-5 finish of the season, the UCR A team finished sixth and the B team seventh. (Final event results)

With winds approaching 35 miles per hour, every par was earned and every wayward shot was punished in the final round.

UC Santa Barbara (301, 292, 303, +32) held on to the overall team lead to claim the team title, DePaul moved up from fourth to finish in second place (296, 305, 309, +46), and Eastern Kentucky (302, 298, 314, +50) remained in third.

UCR A (308, 300, 314,+59), who came in into the final round sixth, outplayed UC Irvine in the final round, but came up short of passing the Anteaters and finished in sixth.

The UCR B team (314, 304, 328 +82) moved into a tie for seventh after playing two shots better than Alabama State, who held seventh alone entering the round.

UC Santa Barbara's Brandon Bauman (E) and Zach Smith (+2) navigated the course for matchings 76s, which helped them retain their 1-2 positions. Eastern Kentucky's Jarrett Brown fired a low-round of the day, 74, to catapult himself into a tie for third with DePaul's Freddy Thomas at +7.

Sam Gillis (+8) shot 76 to finish fifth, just one shot back of the pair tied in third place.

In addition to UCR and UC Santa Barbara, the Big West was also represented by Cal Poly (4th) and UC Irvine (5th). The UC Riverside Men's Golf team returns to action at the Farms Intercollegiate, February 8-9, in San Diego.
