Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team broke out of its offensive slump in a big way Friday evening with a 3-0 victory over visiting UC Santa Barbara.
Blanca Barrio had a hand in all three scores with a score and two assists, the last of which broke the program record for assists in a career.
The redshirt senior scored the first goal of the match in the 18th minute as she broke through the Gauchos defense to take on UCSB's keeper one-on-one. Brittney Rogers came up with the save on Barrio's first attempt, but the San Bernardino, California native's second shot rocketed into the back of the net for a 1-0 Highlanders' lead.
Just over four minutes later, UC Riverside (4-10-3, 1-5-0) secured a corner kick, and Barrio found Hailey Maxwell (
Sacramento, CA) on the far side of the Gauchos' defensive 18 for Maxwell's first score of the year.
The duo teamed up again in the 25th minute on the exact same play, putting the Highlanders up, 3-0. That assist moved Barrio past Tyler Cunningham '16 into sole possession of first place on UCR's career assist chart.
That three-goal lead held up throughout the rest of the match, and helped the Highlanders snap an eight-match losing streak, as well as a four-match scoreless streak.
UC Riverside remains at home for its final two matches of the 2016 season, hosting Cal Poly on Sunday, October 23 at 1 pm PT, and Long Beach State on Thursday, October 27 beginning at 7 pm.
