Baseball Wins Game One Of Saturday Double Header At Bakersfield, 7-3

Bakersfield, CA--The UC Riverside Baseball Team fell behind 2-0 in the first inning Saturday afternoon, but the Highlanders offense bounced back with six runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure a, 7-3, come-from-behind victory.

Tyler Mugraves got the start for UC Riverside, but he struggled with his command in the first, hitting a batter, walking a pair and throwing two wild pitches. The Roadrunners helped him out with a sacrifice bunt, and the Highlanders escaped with just a two-run deficit.

UC Riverside (6-9) cut the lead to one in the top of the second on a Michael Farris' RBI, but CSUB got it right back in their half of the inning.

It remained a 3-1 game until the seventh as Angel Landazuri (2-2) took over on the mound for the Highlanders to start the second, and he allowed just two hits in the third through the eighth innings. Bakersfield (4-9) starter Steven Gee (1-2) matched Landazuri pitch for pitch through the sixth, but the Highlanders finally got to him in the seventh.

Aaron Cisneros led off the inning with a single through the left side and Coach Percival sent out AJ Sawyer to pinch run for him. A ground out moved Sawyer to second, and a wild pitched advanced him to third. Farris picked up his second RBI of the day with a single to left, and after a walk to Colby Schultz, Vince Fernandez doubled to right tying the score at three.

That was the end of Gee's night, but not the end of UC Riverside's rally as Casey Worden offered at relief pitcher Adam Coats' first pitch and doubled to right scoring two.

UC Riverside tacked on two more runs in the eighth as the first four batters reached.  A Colvin RBI single to center scored Drake Zarate, and a wild pitch brought Sawyer home from third.

Jared Morton and Ryan Lillie combined to pitch a scoreless ninth to nail down the win.

Game two of Saturday's double header began at 6 pm PT.
