Box Score San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team stranded 12 runners heading into the
10th inning of a 2-2 ball game at San Diego State Tuesday evening, but sophomore Colby Schultz made certain they wouldn't strand a
13th when he launched an 0-1, two-out offering over the right field wall to give the Highlanders a 3-2 victory over the Aztecs.
UCR struck early putting together a two-out rally in the top of the first thanks to a Cameron Haskell triple and an RBI single to left by Vince Fernandez. That base knock extended
Fernadez's hitting streak to nine games,
UC Riverside (9-12) starter Tyler
Musgraves kept the Aztecs off the board through the first two innings, but in the top of the third, San Diego State plated a pair of runs. Chase
Calabuig drew a one out walk, and Alan
Trejo's single through the right side put two runners on. Tyler
Adkison then drew a walk to load the bases, and Spencer Thornton singled down the right field line to tie the score. Andrew Brown followed with a ground out to second putting the Aztecs on top, 2-1.
Back-to-back, one-out singles in the Highlanders half of the fourth put runners at the corners for Austin Colvin, and he evened the score with a fielder's choice ground out to second.
That's where the score remained until the top of the
10th, although the Highlanders had their chances to push the go-ahead run across before extra innings putting a runner in scoring position in seven of the first eight frames.
Three UC Riverside relievers—Jared Morton, Keaton Leach, and Alex Fagalde—kept the Aztecs off the board over the final seven innings allowing just four hits during that span.
Fagalde (1-0) tossed the final two-and-one-thirds innings allowing just one hit.
Every member of the Highlanders had lineup had at least one hit, and Schultz finished the night with four hits in four at bats including his second homerun of the year.
The Highlanders are off for seven days, before heading to Arizona on Tuesday, March 29 for the start of a two-game series against the Wildcats.
