Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team blasted three home runs Friday night at The Plex, two off the bat of first baseman Austin Colvin, as the Highlanders took a 6-4 decision from Cal Poly in the first game of their three-game Big West Conference series.
The win pulled UC Riverside into a sixth-place tie with the Mustangs in conference, pending the outcome of the Hawai'i at Cal State Fullerton game which began at 7 pm PT.
Cisneros got the scoring in the first, ripping a 2-1 offering from Cal Poly starter Kyle Smith (5-6) over the wall in right field. Austin Colvin reached on a single two batters, prior, as Cisneros' blast put the Highlanders up 2-0.
Shortstop Colby Schultz joined the homer parade in the bottom of the second as he led off the frame with a solo shot down the right field line to make it 3-0.
Highlanders' starter Austin Sodders (6-4) allowed just two hits through the first four innings, but ran into some trouble in the top of the fifth. The junior plunked Josh George to start the inning, and gave up a single to Michael Sanderson two pitches later.
Kevin Morgan tried to sacrifice both runners up 90 feet with a bunt, and he laid down a picture perfect one down the third base line. Sodders fielded the ball cleanly, but rushed his throw to first, and it sailed past Cisneros into the Cal Poly bullpen. By the time the Highlanders retrieved the ball, George and Sanderson scored, and Morgan was standing on third. Brett Binning then lifted a sac fly to center to tie the score at three.
Cisneros put the Highlanders back on top the very next inning, however, as he connected on his second home run of the day with one out in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Colvin's one-out double scored Drake Zarate from second, and Vince Fernandez helped UCR double up the Mustangs' score with an RBI single through the right side.
Cal Poly scored a run off the Highlanders bullpen in the top of the eighth, but Ryan Lillie pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season.
UC Riverside and the Mustangs play game two of their series, Saturday, May 21 at 6 pm PT.
