Baseball Closes Out 2016 Season With 6-0 Shutout Of No. 19 UC Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, CA--Angel Landazuri and Alex Fagalde combined to shutout No. 19 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon, lifting the Highlanders to a fourth-place finish in the Big West Conference.

Only four Gauchos (37-18-1, 13-11) found their way into scoring position on the afternoon, as Landazuri scattered five hits and walked just one batter in seven innings to even his record at 5-5. Fagalade struck out three of the seven batters he faced in the eighth and ninth to close out the victory.

UC Riverside (26-29, 12-12)  took the lead in the first behind a pair of UCSB miscues. Austin Colvin struck out swinging to open the game, but reached first when the catcher dropped the ball, and sailed his throw to first wide of the mark. That error allowed Colvin to reach second, and a wild pitch sent him to third. After Mark Contreras lined out to left, Vince Fernandez ripped a single through the left side to put the Highlanders up 1-0.

Yeager Taylor made it a 3-0 ballgame in the fourth when he turned on a 2-2 offering and deposited it over the right field wall scoring Aaron Cisneros, who singled one batter earlier.

The Highlanders plated two more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to three Gauchos' wild pitches. Contreras singled to right with nobody out, and moved up 90 feet on the first wild pitch of the inning. A walk to Fernandez put runners on first and second, and a Cisernos' ground out put both runners into scoring position. Two more wild pitches cleared the bases to make it 5-0 UC Riverside.

Contreras drive in the final run of the season in the top of the eight, bringing home AJ Sawyer who reached on a pinch hit single.

The Highlanders fourth place conference finish is their best since the 2010 season when the finished in third place with a 13-11 record
